Long Island crash claims life of off-duty NYC cop - Wall Street Journal

MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — State police say an off-duty New York City police officer was killed in an accident on Long Island involving a drunken driver.

Police say 25-year-old Kevin Jessup, of Massapequa, was driving on the Southern State Parkway in Massapequa at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday when he was rear-ended by a car driven by 20-year-old Jonathan Lopez, who also struck another vehicle.

Police say Lopez, of East Meadow, was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and other charges. Information on his lawyer was not available. The driver of the other car was treated and released.

For many emerging nations that boast enviable rates of growth, there is a cautionary tale in India, which is paying the price for letting inflation infect its economy.

Injury Lawyers at Barasch McGarry Salzman & Penson Say Upcoming FDNY 9/11 … - PR Web (press release)

My hope is that the FDNY health report substantiates findings that Ground Zero workers are now contracting cancer strongly enough to have the new diagnoses added to the list.

With the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks almost here, the New York personal injury lawyers at Barasch McGarry Salzman & Penson are anxiously awaiting the findings of the soon to be released Fire Department of New York (FDNY) health study. The seven-year federally funded study has been tracking illnesses and deaths among firefighters who worked at or near Ground Zero. The Fire Department’s chief medical officer Dr. David Prezant reportedly discussed the rise in post-9/11 firefighter cancer rates in several meetings this spring, but has not formally released the study. It is expected out in the next few days.

The law firm of Barasch McGarry Salzman & Penson helped more than a 1,500 firemen and other Ground Zero workers gain compensation from the original September 11th Victims Compensation Fund (VCF). When that fund was discontinued in 2004, it left thousands of ineligible WTC firefighters, workers and family members without financial recourse as they fell ill over time from slow-acting toxins. That is why the passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act is so important, says attorney Michael Barasch.

Barasch McGarry Salzman & Penson represented Detective James Zadroga in his lawsuit to receive compensation for the respiratory illness he contracted at Ground Zero that eventually killed him. Barasch says the firm has been lobbying the new Zadroga Act, not only for it to include additional illnesses/diseases, but to permit compensation to former VCF recipients whose health has deteriorated since their initial awards six years ago.

Plaxico Burress: To Hell And Back To The Meadowlands - SB Nation

Plaxico Burress faced his old Giants team on Monday night, checking off another stage on his NFL comeback tour in 2011. To explain what makes him so fascinating, let's relive 2008, and look at what a successful Plaxico redemption might mean.

Aug 30, 2011 - "I had a drink in my left hand, just was walkin' up the stairs. And, you know, It was dark. I kinda, you know, missed a step, and that's when I felt my gun started to slide. I went to grab it, and stop it from falling... BOWWWW." The whole thing still sounds fake.

Real Sports , talking to a concerned-looking Bryant Gumbel about the night of November 28, 2008. The night he shot himself. "I knew it had went off," he tells Gumbel almost three years later. "I saw the fire in my jeans." "I took a couple more steps... I looked down, I had some Chuck Taylors on, the white was all red, and I was like, 'Oh, I'm in trouble.'" Of course, on the "trouble" front, Plaxico had no idea.

And while the rest of us delighted in the spectacle of stupidity, Plaxico went before a Grand Jury to beg for mercy, didn't get it, and spent two years at Rikers Island. Now he's back.

Citing Safety Flaws, New York Yanks Licenses of 8 Bus Companies - FairWarning

In a crackdown prompted by a rash of fatal crashes this year, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has suspended the licenses of eight charter and tour bus companies for repeatedly violating safety rules.

State officials said the bus companies have failed three or more surpise roadside inspections in the last six months, or failed their scheduled semi-annual inspections or received a federal “out-of-service” orders.

State officials said the bus companies have failed three or more surpise roadside inspections in the last six months, or failed their scheduled semi-annual inspections or received a federal “out-of-service” orders. “The frequent, and at times flagrant, violations of state and federal safety regulations by charter bus companies has gone on for too long and put too many lives at risk,” Cuomo said in a news release .

As Reuters reports, the companies must stop operating by early next week and pay for a complete review, by state transportation officials, of their fleets and company records or face permanent loss of their right to do business in New York. The eight companies operate about 100 buses or other vehicles on New York roads, Cuomo’s office said.

Indian Point Should Review Accident Impact Plans, Board Says - Bloomberg

Entergy Corp. (ETR) ’s Indian Point nuclear-power plant near New York City can’t be relicensed until the company provides a more thorough analysis of the facility’s measures to mitigate accidents, regulators said.

Entergy, based in New Orleans, must complete an analysis of cost-effective ways to lessen the environmental impact of a severe accident, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission ’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board ruled yesterday. The board agreed with the State of New York ’s challenge in January that Entergy’s analysis and the NRC’s review of it were inadequate.

“We find that the NRC staff has prematurely concluded its review before receiving all the requisite information from Entergy,” the licensing board said in its 18-page decision.

Indian Point, located about 35 miles (56 kilometers) from midtown Manhattan , has two reactors with licenses that expire in 2013 and 2015. Entergy has asked the NRC to renew the licenses for an additional 20 years. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has said the plant is too close to the city and should be closed.

Judge affirms $2.5M for survivors of NY bus crash - Vancouver Sun

Signed personal notes from several teams were taped on the door of the Windsor Wildcats' dressing room, Monday. The Wildcats Intermediate BB team was involved in a fatal bus accident south of Rochester, New York in 2005.

WINDSOR, Ont. — Three survivors of a fatal 2005 bus crash in New York state involving a women’s hockey team from Ontario have learned they will receive a total of $2.25 million — possibly paving the way for even bigger settlements to come.

Members of the Windsor Wildcats intermediate BB team were heading to a ski hill following an exhibition game in Rochester, New York, in January 2005, when their bus rammed a tractor-trailer illegally parked on the side of Interstate 390.

The three survivors were first awarded the $2.25 million in March 2010, for pain and suffering, by a New York court. At the time, player Carly Labadie was awarded $1 million by the jury in Livingston County, New York, where the crash occurred, while assistant coach Jason Mailloux was awarded $750,000, and player Tory Gault was awarded $500,000.
